It further defines wastewater as being contaminated water from:

- Agricultural runoff including animal management,
- Stormwaters, meltwaters, and excess rainwater.

So, in any wastewater or leachate assessment study, the following must be investigated:
1. the anticipated flow rate which will require treatment;
2. the composition of the leachate or wastewater at source;
3. the permitted discharge consent by the regulating authority.
From this information, the technology needed to meet the discharge consent can be selected. As there are approximately twenty principal technologies that can be employed for leachate and wastewater treatment, it is clear that the more information that can be obtained prior to project design, the better.
Technologies may be combined in various modes with other standard chemical engineering unit processes, and this can provide a huge range of viable options from which a solution must be engineered to optimise the balance between cost and quality.
